Levi’s x Deli Board: Hyper-Local Retail Activation

What happens when two brands with deep community roots come together in one of San Francisco’s most character-filled spaces?

Hyper-local retail activation

The Levi’s x Deli Board event was a hyper-local retail activation built on shared values. Both brands are woven into the fabric of their communities. One has helped define denim culture for generations. The other has built a fiercely loyal following one unforgettable sandwich at a time on Folsom Street.

The collaboration was an opportunity to bring those worlds together in a way that felt joyful, authentic and perfectly at home.

The Challenge

Deli Board is a San Francisco institution. Tucked along Folsom Street, the shop is quirky, compact and full of personality. The walls are layered with memorabilia. The menu has a cult following. It’s the kind of word-of-mouth spot that locals treasure — part neighborhood fixture, part culinary legend.

Like Levi’s, Deli Board is a homegrown SF brand with deep community ties. Both were built on craft, character and a strong point of view. That shared DNA set the tone for the collaboration.

The goal wasn’t to transform the space. It was to celebrate it.

The activation needed to feel like it belonged there, complementing the shop’s existing rhythm and visual language while honoring the spirit of both brands. For Levi’s, the opportunity was to highlight those shared values — creativity, craftsmanship and community — in a way that felt genuine to the neighborhood.

Our Approach

IRON approached the collaboration with one guiding idea: make every addition feel naturally co-branded and genuinely fun.

Rather than filling the space with new visuals, we focused on moments that would feel right at home inside Deli Board. The question we kept returning to was simple: What already works here, and how can we build alongside it?

Five oversized clipboard posters became the foundation of the visual system. Designed to integrate seamlessly with Deli Board’s existing clipboard wall, they felt like they had always been part of the shop. Materials, scale and tone were all chosen to match the space’s distinctive character.

Every design decision leaned into the personality of the environment. The best ideas were the ones that amplified the story, delighted customers and felt completely at ease in the space.

The result was a collaboration that felt playful, intentional and unmistakably local.

The Work

The event centered on craft, participation and community energy.

A live chainstitch station transformed the shop into a working personalization studio. Guests could watch custom embroidery happen in real time and leave with a one-of-a-kind Levi’s piece, turning a simple retail moment into something memorable.

Custom patches brought the visual story to life. Inspired by 1970s San Francisco, psychedelic typography and skate culture, the designs were refined to reflect actual Deli Board ingredients. Displayed in a hanging shadow box, the patches became both collectible merchandise and part of the storytelling.

And of course, there was the Levi’s® Sando.

Stacked with corned beef, pastrami, cheddar, cherry peppers, cole slaw and 1000 Island on Dutch crunch, the sandwich made the partnership deliciously tangible. It quickly became a centerpiece of the event, drawing customers in and sparking conversation.

The collaboration extended beyond the shop as well. Bounceback cards encouraged Deli Board customers to visit Levi’s Market Street, while Levi’s shoppers were invited to stop by the sandwich shop. The partnership worked in both directions, creating a shared community moment.

The Outcome

The one-day activation brought energy, curiosity and plenty of hungry customers to Folsom Street.

Foot traffic increased throughout the event window. Limited-edition patches sold through quickly. The Levi’s® Sando became both a customer favorite and a social media highlight.

Digital extensions, including animated Instagram Stories and geo-targeted emails, helped amplify the moment while keeping the spirit of the event grounded in the neighborhood.

More importantly, the collaboration showed what happens when two community-driven brands meet on common ground.

The Takeaway

The Levi’s x Deli Board collaboration illustrates a disciplined approach to brand partnership strategy. Rather than relying on scale, the work prioritized context, participation, and respect for place.

When collaborations grow out of genuine community ties, they create moments people remember.

At IRON, we love helping brands find those moments — where creativity, culture and community come together in ways that feel effortless and real.

The Power of Brand Fluency

Projects like this draw on three capabilities at the core of IRON’s practice — retail campaign development, experiential design, and creative operations — working across a single brief.

Deep brand fluency is what makes it possible: when you already know how a client thinks, you can move fast, stay consistent, and focus on the work that actually matters.
